Combat Bad Breath

One of the major causes for bad breath is lack of dental care. Not many of us care enough for our teeth or for our mouth. Just brushing twice a day is not enough care. The mouth just like other parts of our body needs to be cared for in an extensive manner.

In fact, implementing some easy and simple dental care techniques we could combat bad breath. These techniques are not different from what we have been taught right from 1st grade. However, it is whether and how you implement the dental care techniques that make all the difference.

Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal. Yes, that’s right. Although, brushing twice a day is a good habit, it is not good enough. One of the major causes of bad breath is the food particles that remain in your mouth. Thus, you must brush after every meal, if you want to combat bad breath and prevent chronic bad breath. Besides, you must also ensure that you brush the right way. You must brush in such a way that both the front and the back of every tooth are thoroughly cleaned.

Also brush your tongue. Use a soft brush to clean your tongue by stroking it at least 5 – 15 times. You must also clean the middle of your tongue well as most of the bacteria tend to accumulate here and cause bad breath.

Floss at least twice a day along with brushing. Flossing helps deal with the plaque that forms in between your teeth. Plaque is the major cause of bad breath.

Although, brushing and flossing are a great way to combat bad breath, it is important that you use the right kind of brush and do not floss too hard. Using a hard bristle brush or flossing vigorously can hurt your gums and result in bleeding gums. Bleeding gums can in fact lead to “foul” smelling chronic bad breath. Besides, most dentists would recommend you to use a brush that is fairly new, and not use the same brush for too long.

Avoid A Dry Mouth. When your mouth is dry, the bacteria in your mouth tend to be more active, which causes bad breath. The flowing saliva in your mouth washes away all the food particles and bacteria that remain in your mouth. In fact, the bad breath every morning is basically a result of lack of flow of saliva in our mouth, at night. Thus, you must ensure that your mouth is not dry at any time. To avoid a dry mouth, you should drink a lot of water. However, avoid alcohol or coffee. Besides, chewing a gum that is sugar free or sucking on a candy also stimulates the flow of saliva in the mouth.

If your mouth tends to remain dry perpetually, you should consult your dentist who will then prescribe the right kind of medicine to stimulate the saliva flow in the mouth. Basically, since saliva has anti bacterial properties, it prevents the bacteria in the mouth from acting on the food particles and thus helps combat bad breath.
